P53 Shield with Quatrefoil flowers devotional badge.

Although not immediately obvious, this badge combines two symbols used in connection to devotion of the Virgin Mary – the shield as a symbol of protection and the Herb Paris or Truelove flower. While the truelove was a popular lover’s flower (see badge S35 for instance) it was also used frequently in Marian symbolism, perhaps alluding to the Holy Trinity plus one through its four petals, while also sometimes fusing the symbols of earthly love with religious devotion.

Copied from an example in the British Musuem. 14th or 15th century.

30mm high x 26mm wide with pin and clutch brooch fastening.
